WORK ARRANGEMENTS

This temporary full-time (35 hours per week) position is available for the period from July 20 to August 28, 2020. Regular hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Shift days and times may change depending on the Department's need. Occasional evening work may be required.

THE ROLE

Graphic Designer plans, designs and produces print and digital marketing and communications materials and assets using specialized graphic design software applications. Liaises with printers and vendors and ensure quality control over all finished pieces. Develops graphic standards for the College and promote adherence to brand standards within the MCO and throughout the College.

The role will ensure that the College's marketing and communication material is current with all industry trends thus effectively reaching target audience and meeting marketing goals.

The position will work closely with other members of the MCO creative team, as well as frequently liaise with leaders from other departments and faculties to ensure that the visual design element is in line with project goals and strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Plans, designs and produces marketing and communications materials.

  • Conceptualizes and creates marketing and communications materials for print, digital and out of home media, including but not limited to magazine-style brochures/booklets, brochures, flyers, posters, infographics, PowerPoint templates, report templates and related materials; print and digital advertising; digital boards; wall murals; banners; branded clothing and promotional items;
  • Works with detailed creative briefs as well as quantitative and qualitative research data to inform all design decisions;
  • Discusses project goals and strategy with MCO leadership to clarify subject material and design objectives;
  • Collaborates with content team to create materials assisted or driven by graphics to convey concepts in an effective and engaging manner;
  • Plans, conceptualizes, designs and creates layouts for complex pieces;
  • Presents concepts and layouts to MCO leadership and others in College and explains rationale behind design choices;
  • Draws on solid problem-solving abilities and up-to-date graphic design knowledge, skills and abilities to advise on how materials can meet objectives;
  • Makes recommendations on formats and specific design elements of materials (e.g. format, colours, images and other graphical elements);
  • Liaises with clients to review and adjust draft layouts;
  • Works to tight deadlines and manage own project work to coordinate workflow of large graphic design projects;
  • Ensures that layouts are reviewed/approved by appropriate team members and clients.
  • Maintains records of work progress and completion including resources committed;m. Ensures that layouts, inks, embellishments, paper choice and other elements stay within established project budget.

2. Liaises with printers and vendors and ensure quality control of final product.

  • Prepares electronic files for reproduction;
  • Liaises with internal and external printers and vendors to ensure files are built properly from a technical perspective, including liaising with overseas printers as needed;
  • Reviews final artwork of Visual Communication Designer to ensure compliance with printer and vendor needs;
  • Coordinates delivery of artwork to internal and external printers and vendors;
  • Communicates with printers and vendors to ensure quality control of the product, including reviewing final piece(s) before delivery to others;
  • Stays current with trends and developments in the graphic design field and apply that learning and knowledge to all work.

3. Plans, develops and directs the visual identity program and graphic standards of the College to ensure the appropriate College image is embodied in all work produced by the MCO.

  • Ensures consistent visual identity aspects of College brand are maintained throughout all materials produced by MCO by collaborating on projects with the Visual Communications Designer, Marketing Specialist, Communications Coordinators and advising them and other team members on brand element placements and uses. (e.g., advertising, print collateral, website
  • Contributes to the visual identity guidelines and recommend updates and changes based on research into industry best practices and the evolution of the College brand;c. Guides College employees, outside vendors and others in implementation of the graphic standards through distribution of Visual Identity Guide and discussions with employees and vendors as needed;d. Promotes College-wide compliance with visual identity guidelines through discussions with College employees during project work done by MCO or at the request of the Marketing & Communications Supervisors, Marketing Manager or other MCO leadership.

To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

  • 1. Completion of a diploma program in graphic design or a related discipline, supplemented by two years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2. Demonstrated knowledge, experience and skills in a variety of specialized artistic fields such as graphic design, photography and illustration.
  • 3. Strong proficiency in other Adobe applications; notably InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • 4. Demonstrated creativity and imagination in graphic design.
  • 5. Proven ability to stay current with trends and continuously develop skills while continuing to produce fresh and engaging work.
  • 6. Good working knowledge of offset printing techniques and processes.
  • 7. Demonstrated ability to communicate courteously and effectively in person and on the telephone with internal and external stakeholders.
  • 8. Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • 9. Proven ability to work to tight timelines and establish priorities to produce accurate and high quality work.
  • 10. Good working knowledge of English (verbal and written).
  • 11. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
