Salary: Annual Salary $ 50,000-55,000

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Feather Carriers: Leadership for Life is a community mobilization strategy and collaborative life promotion training approach. It is developed on a foundation of relationship to land, Indigenous knowledge and cultural understandings of life promotion. The focus of this position will be to support the development and implementation of a communications and knowledge mobilization strategy under the daily supervision of the Life Promotion Director with oversight of the Executive Director of Mamaway Wiidokdaaddwin. Part of the implementation includes engaging a committee of community members to guide messaging.

RESPONSIBILITES

  • Support the development and implementation of our communications and knowledge mobilization strategy.
  • Coordinate the development of a volunteer community steering committee, who will advise on the development of our messaging in our social media campaign.
  • Work closely with graphic designer, videographer, web developer, and other service providers to produce a series of new communications products for the initiative including videos, digital content, press releases, and other communications collateral.
  • Work closely with our program team to co-develop messaging and communications products regarding our initiative, including content for the website, newsletters, social media, reports, and training materials.
  • Work with our community partners to co-create and cross-post relevant content.
  • Tracking and reporting metrics from events, social media, and the website.
  • Monitor media mentions of our initiative and produce reports of the coverage.
  • Other communications duties as assigned by Life Promotion Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will be a skilled, digital-savvy communicator with strong attention to detail and organizational skills, a positive attitude that respects Indigenous knowledge and who is at ease balancing competing priorities and multiple on-going projects. In addition, the candidate should possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications or related field
  • Experience working with Indigenous peoples and communities
  • A minimum of three years' experience in communications
  • Experience in developing products across a variety of formats
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Sound knowledge of social media applications and principles
  • Proficiency in diverse product development software and hardware (Photoshop, InDesign, infographics, etc.) is an asset
  • Superior organizational skills with ability to work independently and in a team
  • Sound knowledge of Indigenous history, culture and communities
  • Successful candidate must provide a current CPIC with vulnerable sector; have a valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle, and valid CPR and AED certificates.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The Communications Coordinator is expected to typically work in an office environment; however, accommodations may be arranged to support staff working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The Communications Coordinator is expected to work a standard work week, but additionally may be required to work evenings or weekends to accommodate BANAC activities which can be flexed during that pay period.
  • Office hours are from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with one paid hour for lunch; flexibility may be made available upon the approval of the Direct Supervisor.
  • Must have a vehicle, a valid driver's license.
  • Work is typically performed in clinic, office and community settings & possibility of overtime
  • Low to moderate exposure to noise in the work environment.
  • Regular exposure to a moderate level of tension and anxiety due to deadlines, competing political pressures, and the competing needs and demands for limited resources.
  • Periodic exposure to smoke may occur from the burning of sacred medicines: Tobacco, sweet grass, sage, or cedar.
