Communications and Public Affairs Specialist (Hybrid, Burlington, ON)

Reporting to the Public Affairs Manager, you will be responsible for developing communications and public affairs materials, maintaining the OTLA website, supporting member and stakeholder engagement and assisting with events and activities.

Your major duties and responsibilities include:

  • Support the development of Lobbying Updates, MPP Advisors (newsletters) and other communications materials.
  • Assisting with submissions on various advocacy issues.
  • Assisting with major public relations and public affairs projects and activities.
  • Developing early warning and legislative and media watch systems to anticipate and identify risks, threats, vulnerabilities, trends and opportunities that may affect the work of OTLA members.
  • Researching, analyzing and reporting on proactive and reactive policy positions regarding insurance and other issues related to personal injury and plaintiff matters that will affect OTLA members.
  • Support the planning of Lobbying at Queen's Park including Lobby Days, scheduling meetings, developing materials and talking points, and co-coordinating the event.
  • Support the OTLA committees and related working groups in the development of submissions to government, industry and other stakeholder consultations.
  • Providing regular lobbying updates to the Board and members.

You can support high-profile individuals and ideally, you have a university degree or equivalent experience in public affairs and communications and have 3 - 5 years of demonstrated working experience preferably with a non-profit association.

  • Excellent planning and project management of professional-level member services;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work assignments from a variety of staff and volunteers;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including writing, proof-reading, and speaking in English, with high expectations for quality and accuracy;
  • Ability to accomplish projects with little supervision;
  • Strong customer service ethic and a high degree of professionalism;
  • Enthusiastic with the ability to be solution-oriented and make sound judgments;
  • Proficient using the latest versions of Office 365 and Creative Cloud;
  • Discretion is necessary when handling confidential information; and
  • Flexibility to travel provincially as required.

Compensation: $67,500 - $75,000/yr., three weeks paid vacation, medical & dental benefits after successfully completing 3-month probation.
