The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada is a national, nonprofit organization established in 1929 by a special Act of Parliament to oversee the medical education of specialists in Canada. Today, the Royal College has over 55,000 members and the vision remains to advance the learning for specialist physicians to deliver the best health care for all. The Royal College partners with patients, Fellows, residents, and other health care collaborators to lead specialty medical education through setting standards, assessment, and enabling continuous learning so that we can provide the best care possible for patients.

Reporting to the Manager, Communications, the Senior Communications Advisor develops, manages and implements internal and external communications strategies to support the strategic goals and priorities of the Royal College, as well as builds and maintains relationships with clients, and uses audience insights, to create and implement targeted, impactful communication plans and deliverables.

In addition to the above, this position has a particular focus on issues management (for small- and large-scale issues) and projects with significant issues management components; on crisis communications, including support and maintenance of our crisis communications channels; and on media relations and outreach, and media spokesperson support. It regularly advises leadership and internal clients on sensitive, high-risk communications issues to protect and maintain the Royal College’s corporate reputation.

HERE’S AN INSIGHT INTO YOUR TYPICAL DAY TO DAY:

  • Applying communications and risk communications best practices, lead the development and execution of effective communication strategies, messages and deliverables that reflect the needs of members, partners, and the public, while addressing business needs linked to key programs and services.
  • Identify, analyze, respond to, and advise senior leadership and internal clients on sensitive, emerging, and high-risk communication issues and propose mitigation strategies in order to protect and maintain the organization’s corporate reputation.
  • Build relationships with internal clients and provide counsel and coaching to leaders and senior executives on communications strategies, tactics, and messaging.
  • Review the creation of communication deliverables to ensure that they align with organizational strategy and business needs and adhere to branding and editorial standards.
  • Draft and post content to the website relating to issues management and crisis communications.
  • Manage communication project timelines, monitor progress and recommend alternative solutions when needed to ensure milestones/deadlines are met and objectives completed.

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?

  • Minimum requirements:
    o Level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or a related technical degree;
    o Eight (8) years’ related experience working in communications with a focus on risk management;
    o Knowledge of web publishing platforms and experience writing for the web and publishing web content.
  • Ideal requirements:
    o 10+ years’ related experience working in communications with a focus on risk management and counselling senior leadership;
    o Experience working in the health care system.
  • Assets:
    o Communications or public relation (PR) designations;
    o Issues management certification or designation;
    o Verbal and written communication skills in French.

Hourly ranges from $39.50-$49.38
