The Communications and Community Affairs Specialist (CCAS) reports to the Manager, Human Resources and supports the Manager, Marketing and Communications across public relations, stakeholder engagement, and local media activities with the aim of strengthening the positioning of the Carbon Engineering (CE) brand. As a technical storytelling enthusiast, the CCAS will act as a bridge that drives awareness and understanding around CE's technology and mission within the communities where we work and live. Within this, responsibilities include communicating with key local stakeholders, organizing events and site visits, evaluating partnership opportunities, and creating programs that benefit the community.

Recognizing there will be a suite of ongoing activities on site in Squamish, British Columbia - from supporting visits to the CE Innovation Centre (CEIC), to supporting community engagement requests - the CCAS will be based in Squamish, BC, working onsite at least three days a week and traveling to site as needed.

Core Responsibilities

With input from the Manager, Marketing and Communications, this position supports the development and implementation of comprehensive communications and community engagement strategies, including coordinating Squamish-based Innovation Centre activities, researching and drafting a variety of communications materials, and establishing both internal and external relationships to support stakeholder engagement efforts.

The CCAS is responsible for:

  • Researching, anticipating and evaluating emerging trends within the Squamish community and surrounding areas, recommending and coordinating public consultation and engagement efforts to support the local public.
  • Liaising with stakeholders (ex. First Nations, Municipal Council, etc.) in the Squamish and Greater Vancouver communities, including those within local municipalities, partner organizations and sponsorship initiatives.
  • Supporting the Manager, Marketing and Communications in generating compelling coverage of Carbon Engineering's initiatives and achievements and maintaining key support materials, like media kits and educational resources for the community.
  • Supporting the coordination and tracking of local media inquiries, interview requests, media outreach efforts, events, and speaking opportunities.
  • Supporting the coordination of press events, conferences, site tours, and other on-site activities as needed.

Technical

  • Develop a working knowledge of Direct Air Capture and CE's technology, as well as and understanding of the surrounding carbon dioxide removal, sequestration and carbon markets across various key industries.
  • Draft compelling materials to communicate key messages to the public, industry partners, and stakeholders, as well as coordinating the graphic design components where appropriate.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key media contacts, stakeholders and industry influencers both locally in the Squamish/Vancouver areas as well as within the wider climate and energy space.
  • Assist in crisis communication activities as it relates to community engagement, including participating in regular training and supporting rapid, effective responses to any PR challenges.
  • Working with external agencies and resources to develop and implement a range of PR and communications activities to support international work.

Education and Experience

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Experience:
  • Proven experience (8-15 years) working in Community Relations and Communications in the cleantech, climate, energy or related industries.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated ability to craft compelling narratives and press materials.
  • Established relationships with relevant media outlets and industry contacts.
  • Experience in crisis management and proactive issue resolution.

Compensation

  • $67,320 to $102,000 Base Salary
