ABOUT INUVIALUIT REGIONAL CORPORATION (IRC)

IRC was created in 1984 to represent the Inuvialuit and their rights and benefits obtained under one of Canada's oldest comprehensive land claim agreements. With assets over $1 billion, not including vast land holdings, IRC is responsible for corporate investment, land management, and a broad range of social, cultural, and economic programs and services benefiting Inuvialuit. Its subsidiaries have interests in grocery, manufacturing, property management, transportation, and significant dealings in the oil and gas industry.

Since its inception, IRC has experienced considerable growth and its structure and operations have become increasingly complex. Combining local government and service delivery, community development, investment, and operating business divisions, all managed by a single back office, the organization has an array of complexities for the executive staff to navigate. There is an emphasis on fostering understanding, healing, and resilience in a region brimming with unique social challenges and immense potential for transformative change.

JOB SUMMARY

Based in the IRC corporate offices in Inuvik, NT, the Director, Communications will foster the development of strategically driven, focused, efficient, and effective communications and media relations programs. In this newly created role, the Director, Communications, will need to learn the organization's complexities, culture, politics and Inuvialuit values to support and advance Inuvialuit interests by building awareness and understanding of the IRC's goals, accomplishments and activities among Inuvialuit Beneficiaries, internal team members, government stakeholders, and the public at large. Reporting into the Office of the Chair and CEO and as a member of the Leadership Team, the Director will earn the trust of the rest of the team by providing sage counsel and strategic thinking across the organization's broad interests and programs.

Ultimately, the Director will proactively represent and communicate IRC's goals, values, and successes to important stakeholders so that IRC can be widely recognized as a leading Indigenous organization in Canada, which will allow them to further execute their tremendous potential for impact.

As the ideal candidate you will bring experience as a strategic communications director who has worked in a federal or provincial Cabinet Minister's office or other Minister's office focused on Indigenous or other portfolios related to IRC's programs and operations. With exceptional writing and presentation skills, you are a big-picture thinker who has created strategic communications plans and has provided sage counsel to other executives and Board chairs/directors on a broad range of political and programming matters. You can oversee multiple projects simultaneously with an eye for detail, execution, coordination, and operational excellence. Exceptional judgment of appropriate messaging and timing, advanced political acumen, and an ability to mentor developing staff will ensure success in this role. Priority will be given to Inuvialuit beneficiary candidates, but experience working within an Indigenous organization or one with parallel complexities and dynamics will also be highly valued.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a strategic communications leader to create and deploy impactful communications strategies and initiatives within one of the Nation's largest Indigenous organizations.
