Who We Are
Working from mountain tops to ocean bottom, the Hakai Institute does leading-edge, long-term scientific research at remote locations along the British Columbia coast. From ocean physics and chemistry, to ecology and archaeology, our teams use science and technology to better understand the coastal margin of BC and beyond. We then weave together gorgeous imagery, compelling voices, and rich storytelling to let the rest of the world know what we're up to.
Hakai Magazine publishes immersive, trustworthy, and independent journalism from the world's coastlines. Our stories span discoveries in marine biology and archaeology, the social dimensions of fisheries, conservation solutions, and cutting-edge ocean technology.
We combine exceptional writing with stunning photography and our in-house talent in filmmaking and multimedia to produce an award-winning online publication.
