Launched in 2000, Alberta's Tomorrow Project (ATP) has recruited more than 55,000 men and women to help researchers investigate why some people are diagnosed with cancer and chronic disease, and others aren't. ATP is the largest health cohort in western Canada, and collaborates with other similar regional studies within a national consortium called the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow's Health (CanPath). The Scientific Communications Advisor role supports all aspects of communication activities by undertaking planning and delivery of communications, promotional activities, media and partner relations, and issues management. This position is also responsible for collaborating with funding partners, decision-makers and researchers for communications-related activities. Translating complex information for all audiences, and conveying the ongoing value of this rich research resource for greatest impact, is key. A major accountability for this position is to develop strategies to engage the health research community in order to promote the use of ATP data and biological samples repositories.


Develops & implements a communications strategy. Creates key messaging, briefing notes, & speaking notes. Identifies & develops critical relationships, including provincial, national & international researchers & funding partners. Generates the annual newsletter. Represents ATP on relevant internal & external committees & working groups. Acts as liaison with communications personnel from affiliated provincial & national studies. Maintains & updates project branding as required. Develops & implements strategies to engage the research community & other data users, & increase awareness of ATP's research infrastructure. Promotes the use of ATP & CanPath data and samples. Manages content of website. Promotes ATP through social media. Collaborates with ATP analysts to ensure tools for communication, visuals and functionality are appropriate. Works with the ATP research team to support development & delivery presentations suitable for use at scientific conferences, seminars & writes content for various multimedia communication tools. Works with researchers who publish papers based on the ATP databases & biorepository to obtain appropriate exposure in print and broadcast media. Coordinates, promotes & manages ATP research events and activities. Seeks out opportunities for proactive communications. Adheres to AHS & Cancer Care Alberta protocols. Maintains appropriate documentation for position and projects. Supports virtual activities that include webinars and stakeholder meetings. Ensures knowledge of research and tools for data applications & techniques are current. Supports the Strategic Director & Scientific Director, as required. Performs other duties as required.

Required Qualifications:

A degree or diploma in communications, science/health communications, journalism, marketing or a related field (equivalencies for education or experience may be considered). Sound knowledge of communications theories, principles, practices and leading edge methodologies to develop and implement communications strategies, tools, products and services. Ability to work successfully with a broad range of stakeholders including representatives of funding agencies, university researchers, health service delivery organizations, media organizations, and the general public. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational, interpersonal and time management skills. Strong diplomacy and relationship building skills. Ability to manage tight deadlines and juggle multiple priorities. Attention to detail and sound decision-making skills. A focus on/experience in health science sector/research preferred. Experience in fund development is an asset. Project management experience is also an asset. Additional Required Qualifications :
