Senior Communications Advisor 2 permanent, 1 up to 18 months

The Integrated Marketing Communications Branch is seeking an experienced Senior Communications Advisor with responsibilities for team supervision and oversight of the development and delivery of strategic communications and marketing plans and products. As a supervisor, this team member ensures communications activities and products are delivered on time and on budget, and are consistent with the City's reputation and corporate priorities.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, the successful candidate will:

  • Provide strategic consultation and advice to department senior managers
  • Develop, supervise and motivate a team of high-performing communications and marketing professionals to produce excellent work for business partners and the people of Edmonton
  • Create, refine, align and implement strategic communications and marketing plans in consultation with clients, Communications and Engagement colleagues, other departments and contracted consultants
  • Provide direct strategic and tactical communications and marketing advice and support for projects and programs
  • Work well in a fast paced environment with tight deadlines and quick turnaround
  • Track and report on the team's effectiveness and efficiency in achieving intended outcomes
  • Ensure corporate, department and branch processes are communicated to the team and followed
  • Hire and manage external contractors and consultants to plan and execute public communications, marketing and engagement activities
  • Liaise with the City's Media Relations Unit to coordinate all media and social media interactions and campaigns supporting programs and issues, coaching spokespeople, planning media events and fostering relationships with media members
  • Liaise with the public engagement teams to support design and implementation of working groups, open houses, public meetings, surveys and online tools
  • Identify emerging issues and work with communications teams and clients to prevent and address them
  • Provide senior support to clients related to issues management and media relations as it pertains to development files
  • Support an integrated approach to crisis communications response with strategic advice and operational support in various assigned roles
  • Support internal communications and staff engagement activities

Qualifications :

  • University graduation in a communications, public relations, marketing or related field, supplemented by a minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in a designated corporate communications, public relations or public affairs position

OR Diploma in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible experience in a designated corporate communications, public relations or public affairs position

  • 2 years' communications experience in a similar organization
  • 1 year of experience in a related supervisor capacity
  • Experience in successfully creating, developing, implementing and evaluating marketing and communication plans
  • Experience and proficiency with contemporary computer technologies (e.g. Google platform, Adobe suite, etc.)
  • Extensive knowledge of the requirements of mass communication media, internal and external communications planning and public relations principles and practices
  • An additional focus on how requirements change during a crisis would be an asset
  • Demonstrated collaborative and team building skills
  • Extensive traditional media relations understanding and experience
  • Marketing and social media understanding and experience
  • Superior issues identification and management skills
  • Awareness and understanding of effective public engagement tactics and strategy
  • Proven client consulting and relationship building skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Accreditation in the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) would be an asset
  • Experience working with an essential component of city-building, such as planning and development and/or municipal political systems, would be an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style
  • Ability to travel within the Edmonton region and/or be available after hours, often with little notice
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
