Nova Scotia Health Authority provides health services to Nova Scotians and some specialized services to Maritimers and Atlantic Canadians. We operate hospitals, health centres and community-based programs across the province. Our team of health professionals includes employees, doctors, researchers, learners and volunteers that provide the health care or services you may need. This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.


Under the direction of the Provincial Manager, Health Promotion, the Health Communication Specialist is responsible for the development and implementation of a communication strategy specific to the Mental Health and Addictions Health Promotion Portfolio. These initiatives will be designed to reduce the health and social harms associated with substance use and gambling, and promote mental wellness among Nova Scotians. This work will also include coordinating and supporting communication needs within the broader Mental Health and Addictions Program, along with public engagement and community development initiatives. The incumbent must have knowledge of communication principles, social marketing, knowledge translation/exchange, and health promotion strategy and theories.


  • Bachelor's degree in Health Communications, Journalism, or Communications Studies
  • Master's in a related field is an asset
  • 1-3 years of experience working in the communications field required
  • 1-3 years of experience working in a healthcare setting
  • International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) certification is an asset
  • Extensive knowledge of communications theories and strategies
  • Extensive knowledge of health communications theories, principles, practices and techniques
  • Extensive knowledge of social marketing and health promotion strategies
  • Skilled in oral communication
  • Skilled in written communication
  • Skilled in public speaking and formal presentations
  • Ability to translate and disseminate scientific information across a variety platforms
  • Understanding of health literary and strategies to reduce stigma and discrimination
  • Skilled in project management techniques to plan health communications and social marketing strategies
  • Skills in using social media platforms and conducting online communications
  • Media monitoring and analysis
  • Skills writing briefing notes and summarizing complex topics and providing sound recommendations
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong community engagement skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects/ initiatives
