Your Opportunity:

The manager position plays a pivotal role in providing leadership to Community Geriatric Mental Health, including SAILL (Substance Abuse in Later Life), BES (Behaviour Education Support), Community GMH, Geriatric MH Consulting Service and Geriatric MH Day Treatment Service. These teams support the treatment and recovery of individuals living in the community who suffer with moderate to severe addiction or mental illnesses. The manager will manage a large number of multi-disciplinary staff (e.g. RN, RPN, Clinical Supervisors, OT, RT, Social Work, Outreach Workers, Admin staff). The manager is required to be fluent in multiple collective agreements (UNA, HSAA, AUPE), and works closely with attending psychiatrists and clinical medical directors. Manager needs to have advanced knowledge of each discipline's roles, responsibilities and scope of practice (as defined by HPA). With increased demands for service, the manager responds to capacity pressures and strategizes with internal and external partners to increase access and capacity. As part of their role, the manager will work with staff who provide community based outreach services. This results in staff not being located in an AHS site. The manager is required to ensure: adequate access to IT equipment, AHS networking, appropriate clinical space and safety of employees. The manager will participate in initiatives to standardize and evaluate services, to ensure consistency across the continuum of Addiction and MH Services. Complex external partnerships with contracted partners, DAL/LTC facilities and community programs is key to this position. Due to the variety of programs and partnerships within each program, the manager is required to build/create, maintain and enhance positive working relationships, ongoing collaboration as well as operationalizing service delivery within those partnerships.


Reporting to the Director of Adult SW and Geriatric Services- Addiction and Mental Health Calgary Zone, the Manager for Community Geriatric Mental Health will partner with Clinical Medical Directors to manage the delivery of services across these programs. The Manager acts as a mentor and consultant to program staff and promotes clinical development and education within the program setting. This individual must demonstrate the ability to collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders to plan and operationalize services which are patient and family centered, are aligned with organizational goals of improved access to services and to effective, quality care. This position is responsible (both individually and collaboratively) for: Strategic planning, fiscal management, implementing, and maintaining standards of professional practice. Hiring, supervising and evaluating professional and support staff. Implementing changes related to processes and structures to achieve improved access, quality of care and resource allocation.

Required Qualifications:

Graduate of a recognized program with a Baccalaureate Degree in a relevant discipline. Registration with relevant professional organization recognized by the Health Professions Act in Alberta. Minimum 5 years progressive management experience with the health care industry, in a Mental Health setting required. 3

  • 5 years of knowledge/skill development and experience in Mental Health is required. Track record of innovative leadership in a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment. Fluent in multiple collective agreements and have advanced knowledge of each discipline's roles, responsibilities and scope of practice. Demonstrated skills and experience in strategic experience, Quality Improvement, Operations Management, Human Resources Management, and Financial Management. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Interpersonal skills, including ability to problem solve and initiate and implement conflict resolution process. Demonstrated experience working on initiatives with partners both internal and external to AHS.

Additional Required Qualifications :

Knowledge and understanding of the Addiction and Mental Health continuum of care. Commitment to ongoing professional development and continuing education is essential.

Preferred Qualifications :

Master's level preparation is preferred. Geriatric mental health experience preferred. Community adult mental health outpatient and outreach experience is preferred. Knowledge of a variety of treatment modalities across adult/geriatric populations is an asset. Knowledge and skills in Addiction treatment and services is an asset.
