Who we are:

The Victoria Royals are a Canadian major junior ice hockey team currently members of the B.C. Division of the Western Conference in the Western Hockey League (WHL). The Royals are based in Victoria, British Columbia, and play their home games at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

We are currently looking for an experienced Marketing Specialist to join our team. This role will be responsible for managing the creation of marketing campaigns, strategic plans and proposals for the Victoria Royals Hockey Club and will report to our Senior Director, Marketing. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, passionate about marketing and have excellent project management skills. A love for hockey is a must!   • Creating marketing campaigns that drive a measurable increase to revenue and an improved ROI for marketing spend
  • Assist in placing media buys for advertising campaigns (emphasis on social and digital advertising)
  • Create and manage relationships through local events, media partners, sponsors and community organizations that help identify opportunities to support organizational goals including ticket sales, sponsorship sales, and merchandise sales
  • Research, identify and recommend opportunities to engage audiences both in the community and online in support of revenue and brand building objectives
  • Lead the planning, budgeting and implementation of events including, but not limited to, watch parties, on-site mixers, select community events (e.g., Concerts in the Park activation, Beer Week promotions and events) and partner-implemented events
  • Be comfortable with and energized by building and growing relationships with community leaders, fans, and team members
  • In collaboration with the Manager of Fan Experience and the rest of the organization, support the implementation of Theme Nights
  • Work closely with colleagues to support goals of strategic marketing plan as well as company goals
  • Assist on larger internal events including Season Ticket Holder events and other fan events
  • Support and project manage internal requests including, but not limited to, print/collateral requests and partner activation that requires marketing support
  • Expand efforts and relationships with watch party venues including events, online content, and promotions
  • Create relationships within sports industry or similar, curate best practices and network of resources


  • Degree in Business, Marketing, Sport Management, or a relevant field of study
  • 3-5 years of experience
  • Passion for the platform and the sport of hockey and for community and fan engagement
  • Experience organizing, managing, and executing events
  • Experience managing budgets and/or event plans
  • Experience recruiting, training, and supervising small groups of volunteers or employees
  • Experience in marketing on print, radio, direct and other traditional media
  • Experience in digital marketing including web, search, social, email and other digital channels
  • Knowledge of Microsoft & Adobe suite, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, Illustrator
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and website management tools helpful
  • Working knowledge of graphic design, with design tools like Adobe CC
  • Working knowledge of writing effective English copy for marketing uses that are fitting across different channels
  • Experience with the latest commonly used marketing software including those for web, email, social media, CRM, automation, analytics and more
  • Ability to execute a marketing campaign from start to finish, from ideation, budgeting, design, implementation, testing, tracking, reporting, analysis, and recommendations
  • Ability to work effectively and flexibly in a high volume, competing tight deadlines and a fast-changing environment
  • Ability to be hands-on and problem solve in a hands-on approach
  • Ability to work with management with effective communication and time management skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate with diverse team members and stakeholders across the organization
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Very detail-oriented
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends
  • Experience in sports and entertainment is a definite asset
