OpenMedia is looking for a communications specialist who wants to lead our external communications efforts to ensure the Internet is open, affordable, and surveillance-free, in Canada and beyond.

The Communications Manager will act as a spokesperson across all areas of OpenMedia's work. They will lead the organization's external communications, helping amplify the organization's public profile through strategic messaging and razor-sharp communications materials.

The Communications Manager will craft engaging narratives for media, public stakeholders, and members of our wider community, on each of our key issues. Reporting to the Campaigns Director, the Communications Manager will work closely with the management team on organizational strategy and team integration. This role is key to ensuring that OpenMedia's website content is up to date and accessible to the public with an eye towards quality control, and will lead on telling our organizational story with all public-facing communications.

From our social media, to our email content, to our media relations, OpenMedia is fortunate to have an incredible reach and deeply engaged supporters. We're looking for someone to help us sharpen our story telling, crystalize our messaging, and develop a clear strategy for growing our community and reaching new audiences through traditional and social media outlets.

This person will work closely with our campaigns team to harness the power of the news cycle on behalf of our community actions. They will lead our external communications, to help shape public discourse on our issues, frame critical policy discussions, and advance OpenMedia's mission and vision.

Key responsibilities:

  • Leading our media relations, including brand storytelling, news/issue monitoring, writing press releases, managing our press lists and conducting targeted proactive media outreach.
  • Acting as a spokesperson across all mediums and all areas of our work, fielding all incoming media requests, performing interviews and assigning media work to other team members as appropriate.
  • Lead content production and editorial oversight on
  • Copyediting our public-facing communications, including emails, op-eds, and blogs.
  • Work with the campaigns team to develop and maintain talking points on each of our core areas of work.
  • Manage our social media accounts.
  • Support management of general community inquiries via our general inbox.

This position is based remotely, with flexible work hours between EST and PST.

Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada, and have access to a reliable Internet connection.

Skills and experience:

You MUST have:

  • Prior communications experience
  • we're looking for someone who can hit the ground running.
  • Copyediting experience.
  • Experience with media interviews.
  • Experience writing and testing copy for email and web.
  • Social media savvy.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills, able to facilitate collaboration across the team.

The following skills are not required, but would be a big benefit:

  • Fluent in French and comfortable performing interviews in French. Confident in writing press releases in French as well.
  • Familiarity with issues related to Internet policy, in particular in Canada and the U.S.
  • Prior CRM experience, particularly with loading and sending emails.
  • Experience networking and partnering with academics, experts and civil society groups.
  • Experience with grassroots movements and organizing protests and/or stunts.

This is a permanent position with a three-month probation period. Salary is commensurate with experience, but we are able to hire in the range of $52-58k per year.

OpenMedia offers a comprehensive, competitive, extended health benefits package. All full time staff receive three weeks vacation, 12 sick days, and three personal days annually. Additionally, the OpenMedia office closes for approximately five days each December. We also offer flexible and remote working for all staff, within EST
