Develop the products that represent the institution in the global marketplace while maintaining the integrity of VIU's visual identity guidelines. Create products that support VIU's marketing initiatives, both at the institutional and departmental levels across all campuses, as well as corporate operations that support the institution as a whole, the President's office and the Board of Governors.
Reporting to the Director, Brand & Marketing, manage small- to large-scale projects; create new or update existing promotional products for print and digital, including web; developing or updating digital promotional materials; communicate with VIU departments as well as external businesses on VIU brand standards, logo usage and production requirements; advise VIU departments of design best practices; review content for institutional product, can include proofing and copyediting to support institutional message; create print-ready artwork for CMYK and spot-colour separations in preparation for printing; liaise with outside service providers regarding printing and delivery of products; liaise with media providers regarding ad specifications and placement, as required.
Manage several projects concurrently, within brand architecture; work with printers, including detailed print specifications, request quotes from external providers, and evaluate print options; set project timelines to ensure outcomes are functional, effective and completed on time and within budget. Work with internal and external clients to understand promotional objectives and business goals, and draw on problem-solving skills and an understanding of the institution to advise on how the end product will meet objectives.
Graphic Design degree, or equivalent, from an accredited institution. Minimum three years' current, relevant experience working in the graphic design field. Competencies must be displayed in fundamental aspects of design theory and design execution. Professional capability must span a range of skills, including colour theory, typography, computer imagery, print production as well as the ability to create clear messages through design via print and digital formats. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
Extensive prepress knowledge and technical knowledge of offset printing in general, as well as having a good technical understanding of designing for the web; good project management skills; excellent people skills and good understanding of customer service; ability to work comfortably and effectively independently and within a team environment; ability to participate in brainstorming on a casual, non-structured basis; proven ability to work within tight timelines and establish priorities to produce accurate and high quality work; proficiency with digital layout software; and creating promotional multimedia products; advanced proficiency in the relevant computer programs (e.g. inDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Bridge, Acrobat); Mac operating systems; experience with photo management (editing, manipulating and filing); English language proficiency; strong communication and interpersonal skills; flexible and able to adapt to a changing environment; ability to interact professionally and work in a client-centered environment.
Knowledge of VIU programs and operational procedures. Experience working in a post-secondary environment. Professional membership in an organization such as the GDC or UCDA.
