Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE

Reporting to the Program Manager, Departmental Communications, is responsible for developing and distributing Departmental and Divisional newsletters, manuals, marketing and other material, through hard copy publication and electronic media; formatting publications, writing and editing content using plain language techniques, and establishing standard document formats and writing guides; providing communication advice to managers and staff in the use of Departmental communication standards.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acts as project lead to research, develop, write, publish, distribute and maintain standard policy, practices and procedure manuals and instruction guides, both as hard copy and as inter/intranet documents.
  • Works as the project lead with staff, managers and printing staff to produce hard copy and electronic Department marketing material and community directories for clients, agencies, the community and the general public.
  • Coordinates and/or participates in Department-wide translation needs, as related to the production of printed materials, brochures, etc.
  • Develops and produces Departmental/Divisional writing and design guidelines for staff and managers.
  • Writes and edits copy for policies, procedures, manuals, reports, newsletters and marketing materials following plain language principles.
  • Reviews processes and flow of written communications and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Reviews content for a wide range of communication products, both electronic and hardcopy, including brochures, newsletters, reports and presentations that promote and support the program activities of the Department.
  • Reviews documents to ensure continuity and consistency to approved standards.
  • Takes photos at events upon request.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending workshops and in-service training sessions, and reviewing all associated technical communications publications.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Successful completion of a University Degree in Communications, Marketing or a related field or a professional designation in technical writing/technical communications, or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience in technical or marketing writing with exposure to graphic design.
  • Experience in writing and publishing manuals, marketing publications and website content.
  • Highly developed writing and editing skills using plain language techniques.
  • Strong working knowledge of traditional and new communications concepts and technologies.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including customer focus, communication, collaboration and personal ownership.
  • Well-developed presentation, verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to apply the principles of communications and graphic design to support and enhance Department initiatives.
  • Project management skills to lead a project or work group.
  • Computer literacy utilizing MS Office software applications as well as proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, scheduling and presentation applications.
