Marketing Specialist, University Communications

Primary Purpose: The Marketing Specialist will provide marketing and communications leadership and support to the development and implementation of innovative, effective and reliable marketing strategies to advance the reputation, priorities and goals of the U of S Consumer Services Department. This department includes Retail Services, Residence Services, Protective Services, Culinary Services, and Parking and Transportation Services.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Director of University Communications in University Relations, the Marketing Specialist will work with retail and area supervisors across the departments to help identify new business opportunities, develop campaigns and analyze results to measure the marketing effectiveness and ROI. This position's primary focus is on Consumer Services unit initiatives which include increased sales of U of S and Huskie apparel and merchandise, increased sales and awareness of Culinary Services offerings and events, and increased communication and marketing efforts in Residence Services, Parking and Transportation Services, and Protective Services. The marketplace is highly competitive, and the university environment is people-oriented, complex, decentralized and fast-paced, with concurrent priorities and deadlines. Consequence of error is significant to the university's reputation and profile. The position requires some travel and occasional evening and weekend work.

The specialist exercises judgment, discretionary decision-making and builds collaborative relationships with a cross-section of senior administrators, staff, students and other key stakeholders to develop and implement the marketing and branding strategies of the Consumer Services Department while ensuring workplace efficiencies and seamless service to stakeholders. The work requires a proactive, strategic approach and the ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences through a variety of methods and communication mediums. Establishing and maintaining positive, mutually beneficial relationships and confidentiality is essential to success. Work will involve strategic marketing planning, including creation, co-ordination, implementation, management and evaluation activities, which are necessary for the success of projects.

University Relations (UR) is responsible for institutional advancement programs (which includes alumni and external relations, communications and marketing, and development) and as such is dedicated to supporting the advancement needs of all colleges, units and the university as a whole. UR is comprised of specialized teams including Operations and Services, Advancement, and Strategic Communications. More than 100 advancement professionals work at various locations including the UR office in the Thorvaldson Building and in colleges and schools across campus. The specialist is located in the central University Relations office.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

  • Develop and implement strategic marketing plans with measurable outcomes to support the priorities of the Consumer Services Department
  • Manage projects from initial meetings with multiple partners (Retail Services, Culinary Services, Residence Services, Parking and Protective Services) through to delivery of final products
  • Write copy for a variety of mediums including print, radio, television and online
  • Build and foster key relationships with leaders and marketing professionals at the university in a highly decentralized environment, and work with community partners in order to advance the department marketing and branding priorities
  • Create and organize promotions and events to generate new business in university retail outlets (Shop USask Bookstore, Shop USask Health Sciences, Shop USask at Preston Crossing, Tim Hortons Locations, Starbucks, Booster Juice, Arts Cafe? and Ag Cafe?)
  • Execute and/or direct content creation that supports each unit's social media strategy to contribute to the strengthening of the university's online presence

Schedule, monitor and optimize social media posts and accounts

  • Provide resources and support in managing unit website maintenance and minor updates
  • Conduct customer research initiatives through focus groups and surveys
  • Ensure the university's verbal and visual identities and guidelines are stewarded and appropriately implemented in all marketing strategies and plans
  • Provide innovative, effective and reliable strategic marketing advice and expertise to the Consumer Services unit to support the success of business initiatives and outcomes
  • Manage budgetary requirements of marketing initiatives and projects for each Consumer Services unit and ensure the effective use of resources
  • Manage consultants, freelancers and other suppliers related to the marketing operations
  • Protect and enhance the reputation of the university by ensuring that department plans and strategies align with university priorities, directions and positioning strategy

Education: an undergraduate degree in marketing, communications or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. IABC and CPRS membership and credentials are considered assets.Experience: three to five years of directly related experience in marketing and/or communications with at least three years of progressive responsibility; experience and success in applying marketing and branding strategies and principles in a complex and decentralized environment; experience working in a post-secondary environment is an asset. Knowledge of the University of Saskatchewan's culture, issues, goals and stakeholders is an asset.
