The Application Developer implements best practices in the support of learning technologies,solves complex problems with recurring incidents and creates plans for proactive process improvement. The Application Developer regularly evaluates the current state of systems, identifies aspects that could be improved, and recommends changes to facilitate those improvements.

Some Typical Duties Include:

  • Configures learning technologies in collaboration with other IT teams, the TLC, and Faculties.
  • Works with IT teams such as Infrastructure, Collaborative Technologies, and the Service desk to ensure appropriate infrastructure and client support are provided in the management and support of learning technologies.
  • Assists clients with issues or questions through a variety of channels, including email, phone, instant messaging, and the internal service management solution.
  • Contributes to the development of service roadmaps for learning technologies.
  • Performs regular reviews of user needs to improve systems, reviewing incident trends and user feedback.
  • Maintains system functionality, developing test plans, user acceptance testing and working with internal and external teams during upgrades.
  • Acts as liaison between the TLC and IT Services by participating in various advisory committee and support groups.
  • Collaborates with the TLC in the development of best practices and system configurations across Learning technologies.
  • Provides technical support and troubleshooting for staff, faculty, and students in the use of the Learning Management System (LMS), blogs, wikis, and other learning software.
  • Diagnoses and resolves issues by using best practices for system configuration and providing demonstrations for new and returning users, including faculty and students.
  • Integrates multi-media and third-party extensions for improved system functionality in various learning technologies such as Moodle, Kaltura, media stream and other applications.
  • Maintains and extends processes for the support and development of websites, wikis, blogs, and other proprietary applications using a variety of development tools.
  • Leads upgrades and maintenance of the LMS with the external service provider.
  • Provides subject matter expertise for the development of educational technology training and support materials.
  • Contributes technical expertise and support to projects such as the annual Graduate Exhibition, Faculty orientation and similar projects.
  • Maintains documentation for applications and related services.
  • Provides backup for peer Application support and other related services in Information Technology Services as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science or a related field with an emphasis on web-based technologies.
  • Minimum three years' experience in learning technologies, web design, configuration, user interface development and management.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with PHP, JavaScript/jQuery, HTML5, CSS, and MySQL.
  • Experience with Application development and support models.
  • Experience with Application and Database integration dependencies.
  • Experience managing a Learning Management System (LMS) such as Moodle.
  • Knowledge of security best practices for end users.
  • WordPress, Drupal, or MediaWiki experience is an asset.
  • Experience working in an ITIL-based service environment is an asset.
  • Experience with a version control system (Subversion or GitHub) is an asset.
  • Ability to integrate web-based applications with proprietary and open-source software.
  • Proven ability to write utilities, scripts, and web-based applications in an open-source environment.
  • Proven systematic troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to plan and organize effectively, meet deadlines, and prioritize needs and demands.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as productively and supportively in a team environment.
  • Ability to create and upload H5P content.
  • Knowledge of Kaltura media integration and management.
  • Ability to keep current around expertise.
