About The Role

We are seeking an established media relations leader with a proven track record of planning and executing innovative media relations programs. Reporting directly to the SVP, Marketing, the Director, External Communications will drive awareness of the Sephora corporate, brand, and commercial strategies through media relations, partner relationships & reputation management. In this role, the Director will focus on developing the external communications strategy to drive earned media and positive brand perception and will implement the plan through the building of strong narratives, collaborating on campaigns to leverage with media, handling issues, and providing counsel to senior executives.

The Director is creative, innovative and collaborative, and comfortable navigating a complex organization with contending priorities. They thrive in a lively, exciting and fast paced work environment and can expertly lead communications strategy as well as daily execution. Beauty, lifestyle and/or retail experience are considered an asset.

What You'll Do

  • Develop, plan, and lead all aspects of external communication initiatives that increase awareness and enhance the Sephora brand with key partners - customers, media, and general public
  • Proactively own the external earned media and PR strategy and execution (both corporate and commercial PR) to support the brand strategy and corporate narrative
  • Partner and consult with colleagues across marketing and cross functional teams to build compelling content and campaigns that drive earned media
  • Develop key communication materials including press releases, media pitches, paid editorials and sponsorships that support company strategy and vision
  • Collaborate with the internal communications & employer branding team to drive integrated campaigns from both an internal and external lens
  • Partner with the North America External Communications team to ensure alignment for North American strategy and programs
  • Lead all aspects of and steer the strategic day to day relationships with PR agency partner
  • In partnership with our PR agency, oversee all media relations inquiries to the organization
  • Measure the communications program and build analytics reports to ensure quality, improve impact, track success and develop standard processes
  • Act as the key media contact for customer, brand, product, issues management and community initiatives
  • Accountable for planning, providing counsel and activating issues and crisis management with the executive team
  • Keep current on emerging PR trends/developments and grow knowledge of the business, related tools and technique

What You'll Bring

  • A passion to drive Sephora's brand and commercial agenda through external communications/PR
  • 10+ years of experience in External Communications, PR and Media Relations
  • Proven track record of delivering impactful traditional and new media outreach activities/campaigns
  • Excellent understanding of public relations
  • Polished written and oral communications skills, with an ability to develop compelling storytelling and narratives
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Strong project management, organizational and budget management skills
  • Results driven, motivated by a high sense of performance excellence and urgency
  • Ability to collaborate cross functionally across the organization
  • Ability to provide strategic and creative solutions
  • Ability to drive cross channel support to amplify earned campaigns
  • Agency and/or in-house communications experience
  • Strong decision-making skills and an eye for business
  • Undergraduate or Post Graduate degree in communications, marketing, journalism or related field
