COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING MANAGER

The British Columbia Schizophrenia Society (BCSS) has a vision where those affected by schizophrenia and other serious mental illness receive effective treatment and support, and family members are an essential partner within the mental health system. Our mission is to support families affected by schizophrenia and other serious mental illness in British Columbia through education, advocacy and research. BCSS was founded in 1982, and is a non-profit organization with its provincial office located in Vancouver, BC.

COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING MANAGER POSITION

The Communication and Marketing Manager is responsible for the internal and external communications of BCSS. This includes BCSS' e-newsletter, media relations and outreach, assisting with podcast production and development, and supporting initiatives with other community partners, including BC Partners. This position has the lead role within the Communications portfolio, providing leadership and guidance for the team. The Communications Team is comprised of the Digital Communications Coordinator, Kids and Teens in Control Coordinator and Events Coordinator. This position is also key in the development of the BCSS and BCSS Foundation brand, and in helping increase public awareness of both organizations.

Position reports to: Director, Operations and Programs

KEY DUTIES:

Communications:

  • Work with BCSS staff to develop key messages around programs, advocacy and education
  • Update and maintain the BCSS Communications Plan to promote key messages and increase awareness of BCSS and the BCSS Foundation
  • Develop content for web, newsletter and specific campaigns
  • Support the Development Team and BCSS Foundation in fundraising campaigns
  • Supporting the Events Coordinator with communications and promoting all BCSS and BCSS Foundation events
  • Support the Senior Leadership and Policy Committee on proposals and reports
  • Identify and develop new communications materials
  • Reviews all communications collateral for BCSS and BCSS Programs
  • Ability to communicate in plain language

Marketing:

  • Update and create marketing materials for the Regional Managers and Educators
  • Review content for the BCSS and BCSSF websites to ensure accuracy and consistency
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff, volunteers, Medical Advisory Committee, Policy Committee, etc. to ensure accuracy and relevancy
  • Review, update, and create marketing collateral for BCSS, including annual report, promotional materials, brochures etc.
  • Update and create marketing collateral to increase awareness about key issues relating to schizophrenia, severe mental illness, and the importance of family involvement
  • Develop and refine BCSS brands with Senior Leadership
  • Build digital media plan and strategy with Digital Communications Coordinator
  • Main contact and lead on BCSS podcast, working with external podcast company
  • Support the Digital Communications Coordinator with the development of the BCSS newsletter
  • Support the KIC/TIC Communications Coordinator with content and newsletter
  • Coordination and development of organization-wide promotional items

Media:

  • Respond to media requests and inquiries
  • Write and distribute media materials
  • Pitch story ideas to media
  • Track media coverage
  • Maintain an updated media contact list
  • Develop relationships between BCSS and key local and national health reporters and journalists
  • Secure media around key World Schizophrenia and Psychosis Awareness Day

Administration & Leadership:

  • Manage and propose budget for Communications & Marketing campaigns and efforts
  • Supports BCSS staff and volunteers on various platforms like Teams, Zoom, Canva and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Works closely with and provides support to members of the Communications Team
  • Provides mentorship and direction to the BCSS Communications Team
  • Represents BCSS at select BC Partners meetings and projects (i.e., Visions Journal and HeretoHelp)
  • Collaborates with BC Partners on initiatives supporting mental health and substance use literacy across BC
  • Identify and secure external vendors and contractors
  • Responds to or directs general inquiries (sent through the website or the general BCSS email) to the appropriate staff

KEY COMPETENCIES:

  • 5-7 years' direct experience in communications and marketing
  • 3-5 years' experience leading a team within a non-profit organization
  • Post-secondary education in communications, marketing, media relations or related discipline
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Good understanding of severe and persistent mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia is a strong asset
  • Experience working with contractors and vendors
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish rapport with staff, volunteers, families, and diverse populations
  • Strong time management and multitasking abilities and willingness to manage multiple priorities
  • Superior project management and organizational skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to complete assignments in a timely and efficient manner
  • Ability to use tact and discretion when handling sensitive and/or confidential matters

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to work typical business hours - working some evenings and weekends may be required
  • This person will be expected to work in a hybrid model

Salary range for this position is $58,500 -$66,500 and includes extended healthcare benefits, RRSP matching and 4 weeks annual vacation.
