Position Title: GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Employment: 12 month (Full-time Temporary)
JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Design Team Supervisor, the Graphic Designer is responsible for providing creative design services to increase awareness and understanding of the Durham District School Board's programs, services, initiatives and events with a keen focus on the rich, culturally diverse community we serve. The position works collaboratively with all staff across the system, and in conjunction with the Director of Education, senior team members and the Communications Department to design a variety of print and digital media. In addition, this position adheres to the DDSB Ignite Learning brand in presenting visual messages that are credible, professional, representative of our strategic goals and priorities.
The incumbent is an experienced, passionate, confident, enthusiastic, engaged Graphic Designer who is eager to work as part of a team committed to delivering industry-leading designs and will produce appealing and impactful designs that follow best practices, keep up with the latest styles and trends and fit with the DDSB's overall marketing and branding strategies.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Consults with the Design Team Supervisor and other DDSB staff to discuss project requirements.
The Graphic Designer then advises on design strategies to reach a particular audience, including type, images, hierarchy based on established criteria
Creates concept artwork, logos and other branding, page layout and document mock-ups
Designs professional quality material: brochures, calendars, infographics and various data visualization, reports, signage, banners, social media and web ads, newspaper ads, posters, interior and exterior wall wraps, school and department logos, and certificates
Build impactful, quick reference infographics using complex report data from various sources requiring excellent technical and design skills
Design for large scale interior and exterior wall spaces necessitating ongoing consultation process and off-site visits: school hallways, boardroom panels, doors, library walls, DDSB vehicles, secondary school revitalization
Design for digital screens and kiosks, web ads, and all social media platforms
Using expert knowledge and experience, advise on design/technical/creative challenges with staff
Host in-house creative workshops with administrative staff to teach techniques to improve document and presentation projects
Develop and build PowerPoint slide-show presentations for the Director of Education and senior team
as requested
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Thrives on generating new concepts and has a proven ability to design impactful creative assets from conception to completion
- Ability to refine other's ideas and come up with new ones to create an engaging visual experience
- Ability to work on multiple projects and deliver refined designs in a short turnaround time
- Exercise strong technical ability to manually render illustrations/typography
- Strong understanding of colour theory, prepress and graphic production process
- Create and incorporate the organization of text, data and charts/graphs, when necessary;
personalize these charts to ensure a clear comparison/contrast of data
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve effectively and use good judgement in all decisions
- Excellent organizational, problem solving, time-management, multitasking and conceptual skills
with a high-level sense of design and creativity;
- A superior attention, and eye for detail
- Possess an approachable personality that allows the opportunity to build meaningful, trusting relationships and present a courteous, professional and positive image at all times
- Ability to work with diverse communities with respect, sensitivity, creativity, innovation, and cultural understanding
- Ability to design within the parameters of accessible design and knowledge of Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requirements and guidelines
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills
- A strong willingness to participate fully in a team environment
QUALIFICATIONS:
University Degree in Graphic Design or Visual Arts; or 3 year Advanced Community College Diploma in Graphic Design or Visual Arts
3 years related experience working in graphic design
Experience working with, and designing in both print and digital mediums
Expertise working within an Apple/Macintosh environment
Advanced computer skills in Adobe Creative Suite
Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
Experience using Trello project management tools
Experience working with printers would be considered an asset
Demonstrated excellent knowledge in layout, typography, branding and design principles
